IDEA IN CONTEXT -FINAL (ORGAN DONATION)

Organ Donation

(Kidney Donation)

What is organ transplantation?

Organ transplantation is a surgical procedure to replace a failing, diseased organ with a healthier donor organ, such as a heart, liver, kidney, or lung.
 There are two types of organ donation;
  • Kadaverik organ donation (after death )
  • Organ donation during life.

What are the risks associated with organ transplantation?
this depends on the type of transplant you receive. Of course, with a major surgery like this, there are
complications associated with the procedure that are fairly common to all transplants, including:
  •  Blood clots
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Organ failure
What is organ rejection?
  • rejection of a transplanted kidney is due to the same immune response our body produces to help us against cold and other viruses
  • to prevent rejection of the new kidney immune suppressive medications (also know rejection drugs) are used to suppress the body's immune system
  • After the transplant a patient can live a normal life but they must live a healthily lifestyle because being on anti-rejection medication it will weakened the patient's immune system so personal hygiene is also very important
How to prevent organ rejection?
If you have received an organ transplant, it is essential that you do everything possible to lead a healthy life and try to prevent rejection. Over time, your risk of rejecting the organ goes down, but it never actually disappears. You will receive anti-rejection medications for the rest of your life to help prevent rejection.
Anti-rejection medications, also called immunosuppressants, work by reducing your immune system response to unrecognized materials that enter your body. Your therapy will work to achieve an important balance between an immune response: one that is too weak to reject your organ, but strong enough to prevent serious infections. To achieve this balance, you may be placed on a combination of medications.

Living with new kidney?
  • The patient must always follow up with the doctor or kidney specialists after the transplantation .
  • The patients should always take their medication as per directed.
  • Most people are able to get back to their normal activities and work within 3 to 6 months after the transplant .
  • Exercise (gentle at first) is also an important part of toning muscles and maintaining good health.
  • Patient also can consult their doctor or dietitians for proper dietary intake
  • To having a baby after receiving a kidney transplant is possible but to usually advised  until at least 1-2 years of year of good kidney function
What organ can donation?

 PICTURE 1
Who can donate organs?
In Malaysia, the Ministry of Health Malaysia only allow organ donation during life to immediate family members blood relatives. This includes a pair of identical twins, first-degree family members ("first degree relative") and second-degree family members ("second degree relative").

SECOND DEGREE
